Oxford Flute Summer School Bursary Fund

"The course has given me such a vast amount of information about my playing in a way that I have not experienced before. It was a very special experience and has guided me to the career path I now wish to choose"

Congratulations to a 2015 bursary recipient who has gained a place in the National Youth Orchestra for the second time.

The Fund

The Bursary fund was established in 1996 to offer full or part-bursaries for players between the ages of 15 and 24 to attend the Oxford Flute Summer School, as the Trustees recognized that many accomplished young flautists were prevented from attending the course because they could not afford the fees.

Between 1996 and 2017 over 70 young players have received help with the fees and many of them have gained places at music colleges and are now playing professionally.

The inspiration and guidance gained in a week of intensive work with leading teachers and players enables Bursary recipients considering a musical career to prepare with confidence for the next stage in their development.

Applications for financial help

Applicants should read the following notes carefully. Our financial help is given as bursaries which normally cover the full fees and accommodation costs for any of the course options but part bursaries are sometimes awarded. In awarding bursaries the Trustees take into account not only the developed and potential talent, but more crucially, the inability to afford the fees. Checks are made to establish genuine financial need and bursaries are not awarded merely for technical and musical excellence.

Applicants for bursaries must:

  • be between the ages of 15 and 24 on the first day of the Oxford Flute Summer School course
  • demonstrate that they cannot attend the course without a bursary and that they have tried and failed to raise funds from family and other sources
  • have the potential to achieve the standards needed to pursue a career in music
  • demonstrate they are able to benefit from all aspects of the course
  • The application process is simple. Download or complete an application form and submit it together with a recording by the closing date (17th March 2017 by 5pm)

    Fundraising

The Bursary Fund is probably the only fund in the UK specifically dedicated to helping young flautists. Anyone interested in contributing to the fund either by making a donation or by running a concert or other event to raise money may contribute through CAFonline. All donations are acknowledged and would be much appreciated.
